What is ISO 45001:2018?

BS ISO 45001:2018 is the new international standard for Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems.

It is a tool to help organisations effectively protect the health and safety of their workers and others affected by their activities.  For organisations of any size, type, and location, certification to ISO 45001 is recognition for having achieved an international benchmark.  This in turn may positively influence customers who are concerned about their social responsibilities.

Benefits of ISO 45001 also include improvement in regulatory compliance, reducing costs of incidents, and reducing disruption to operations and employee absence and turnover rates. Managing safety and health risks certainly is a positive step (read more about safety management systems)

ISO 45001 integrates with ISO 9001 (Quality) and ISO 14001 (Environmental) and so offers consistency and efficient sharing of effort and resources.

Published on 12th March 2018, ISO 45001 replaces BS OHSAS 18001.  Organisations wishing to become certified must implement the new standard.  Those already registered to OHSAS 18001 have a three year migration period in order to convert to the new standard.

As safety and health specialists, we work with organisations from gap analysis stage through to implementation and monitoring and auditing.

Gap Analysis

The gap analysis can be conducted either as preparation for undertaking the ISO 45001 assessment for the first time, or for those converting from OHSAS 18001.  Our team also undertakes works between certification renewals to ensure your safety management system remains both effective and compliant.

We are able to gain an understanding of the goals of your business and the reasons associated with undertaking the assessment. Using this information, our Health and Safety Consultants will then begin to compare current company standards and processes against the standards, and work with you to produce an implementation plan.

Implementation Plan

Our team of experts are able to use the information gathered at this stage and develop a Safety Management System fully compliant with the standard. The implementation plan acts as an action plan for businesses to work through over a set timescale, with regular review meetings factored in to monitor and measure progress.

Working with your organisation and team, our Consultants help to implement the safety management system, including training, ready for certification assessment.
